Poland accused an individual of planning a parcel bomb incident, raising concerns about potential sabotage origins from Russia.
Polish prosecutors have charged a Ukrainian woman, identified only as Kristina S., in connection with an alleged parcel bomb plot that also involves two unnamed Russian suspects. The parcel, containing explosives and a shaped charge device, was intercepted before it could cause damage in Poland.
The indictment was filed against Kristina S in the central town of Piotrków Trybunalski. According to the National Prosecutor's Office, the parcel contained nitroglycol, hidden military-grade electric fuses, an initiating device, a metal thermos with a shaped charge insert, and powdered aluminium. If an explosion had occurred, the shipment could have caused significant damage to critical infrastructure.
The structure of the device, a so-called shaped charge bomb, was designed to inflict maximum damage upon detonation. This parcel bomb plot is just one example of the alleged sabotage and attacks on the continent that have been attributed to Russia since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022.
Security agencies across Europe have accused Russia of staging dozens of attacks and other sabotage incidents. In July last year, there was a series of parcel fires targeting courier companies in Poland, Germany, and the UK, which Western officials blamed on the Kremlin. However, the authorities have not disclosed the names or detailed identities of the two Russian suspects suspected of collaboration in this plot.
The alleged misuse of recovery funds by Poland has also been brought to the attention of the EU Commission. Despite these allegations, Poland's interior ministry has detained at least 44 people, including Russians, Belarusians, Ukrainians, and Poles, on suspicion of espionage or sabotage for Russia or Belarus since the start of the all-out war.
Meanwhile, Poland's President, Karol Nawrocki, is preparing for his first trip as President to the US for talks with Trump. This development comes as Poland strengthens its border controls with Germany and Lithuania until October, in response to the ongoing security concerns in the region.
As the investigation into the parcel bomb plot continues, the public awaits further information on the identities and backgrounds of the two unnamed Russian suspects. The case serves as a reminder of the ongoing tensions and alleged acts of sabotage that have been attributed to Russia in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine.
