Poland: A drone, suspected to be of Russian origin, has crashed in Warsaw
In the early hours of August 20, 2025, a Russian military drone crashed and exploded in a cornfield near the village of Osiny, eastern Poland. The incident, approximately 100 kilometers south of Warsaw and 100 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, caused minor damage to nearby houses but no casualties were reported.
The Polish authorities confirmed the drone was Russian, suggesting it likely crossed into Polish airspace coming from Belarus. In response, Poland's foreign ministry issued a diplomatic protest to Russia, calling the incident a deliberate provocation amid ongoing discussions about potential peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. NATO was also informed, but the incident does not trigger Article 5 collective defense measures.
Defense officials noted the drone was designed to avoid radar detection by flying low, which explains why it went undetected by Polish air defenses. The crash site left a crater about six meters in diameter and 50 centimeters deep, with burned plastic and metal debris at the impact site. Onet published images from social media showing a charred engine with a propeller.
The exact cause of the crash remains unclear, with speculation surrounding whether the explosion occurred in the air or on the ground. Videos from local portal LukowTV show a bright flash and a loud bang at the site of the crash, which shattered windows in several houses in the area.
This incident follows previous intrusions and crashes in Polish territory related to the war in Ukraine, highlighting ongoing regional tensions. Poland, an important political and military supporter of Ukraine, has seen itself threatened by Russia and has been heavily arming. The defense minister, Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, stated that Russia is once again provoking NATO countries.
The crash occurred at a time when efforts are being made to achieve peace in Ukraine, which is being attacked by Russia. All NATO allies have been informed about the incident, underscoring the potential escalation of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The Polish government is conducting a search of the area following the drone crash, hoping to gather more information about this latest development.
