Poisoning allegation: Wife claims Navalny was victimized in Russia
Alexei Navalny, the most prominent critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, died in Russian custody about a year and a half ago at the age of 47. His death sparked international controversy and investigations.
In August 2020, Navalny was poisoned with the nerve agent Novichok, an incident he later blamed on the Russian intelligence service FSB. After being treated in the Berlin Charité, he returned to Russia in January 2021, where he was immediately arrested by Russian authorities.
The initial charge against Navalny was for violating registration requirements from an earlier case. However, the Russian justice system later initiated further proceedings against him, including for extremism, and sentenced him to a long prison term. These proceedings were criticized as politically motivated in the West.
Julia Navalnaya, Alexei's widow, claims that he was poisoned. She has been calling for the release of the lab reports, accusing Western politicians of delaying the publication of the results for 'political reasons.' Two independent labs in unspecified countries examined biological samples smuggled out of Russia, and the labs concluded that Alexei was murdered and specifically poisoned.
Critics of Russia and many Western governments believe Navalny was deliberately killed. Russian authorities, however, officially attributed his death to natural causes. Julia Navalnaya emphasizes the need to identify the poison used, with the aim of holding those responsible accountable.
The laboratories that conducted the analysis of Alexei's biological samples were selected based on their expertise and independence, including facilities in Germany, Sweden, and France. The specific labs, their locations, and the exact results of the examinations are not specified.
The proceedings against Navalny in Russia were not the first time his actions were met with controversy. His outspoken criticism of Putin and the Russian government had made him a target for many, with his life and safety often at risk. His death has left a void in the Russian opposition movement, and his legacy continues to be a subject of debate and discussion.
