Poisoning Allegation Surfaces: Navalny Suggested to Have Been Poisoned in Russia by Widow
In a recent development, Julia Navalnaya, the widow of prominent Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, has called for the release of lab reports regarding the poisoning that led to her husband's death.
Alexei Navalny, a vocal critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, passed away in a prison north of the Arctic Circle in February 2024, at the age of 47. His death occurred approximately a year and a half after he was arrested upon his return to Russia in January 2021.
Navalny was initially charged with violating parole from an earlier case. However, his widow maintains that he was poisoned, and critics abroad have condemned the cases against him as politically motivated.
The poison used on Navalny has not been disclosed by Julia Navalnaya. She has, however, stated that laboratory tests on Alexei were conducted by specialists at the Charité hospital in Berlin, Germany. Two independent labs in different countries examined biological samples from Navalny and concluded he was murdered by poisoning.
Julia Navalnaya has criticized Western politicians for allegedly delaying the release of information for political reasons. She has also urged for the type of poison used on her husband to be clearly named.
Officially, Russian authorities attribute Navalny's death to natural causes. However, many Western governments believe he was deliberately killed. The labs that examined Navalny's remains and their locations were not named by Julia Navalnaya.
Navalny was Russia's most prominent critic of Putin, gaining widespread support both domestically and internationally. Following his death, more cases were initiated against him by the Russian justice system, including one for extremism, and he was sentenced to a long prison term.
Navalny was poisoned using the nerve agent Novichok in August 2020, which he later blamed on the Russian intelligence service FSB. It remains unclear who commissioned the lab examinations mentioned by Julia Navalnaya.
