Pohl erects Pohl's tombstone, adorned with Kasper's effigy
On Thursday, September 25, 2025, at 6:00 PM, Bergisch Gladbach will witness a significant event as the memorial and grave for renowned puppeteer Gerd J. Pohl are unveiled at Puetz-Roth, Kuertener Street 10.
The event will mark the inauguration of a special Kasper bust, made of sandstone, which will serve as Pohl's final resting place. However, it is important to note that this is not an actual burial, but rather the unveiling of his grave site.
The Kasper bust symbolizes stage life in Germany, and its unveiling precedes the premiere of a new ballad program, "Song of the Spirits over the Waters." The program will feature great texts by poets like Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Detlev von Liliencron, Heinrich Heine, or Ludwig Uhland.
Pohl himself will be the reciter, with Manuele Klein and Detlev Weigand providing the sound performance. The duration of the program is approximately 75 minutes.
David Roth will welcome attendees, and Willibert Pauels will give a keynote speech. The Duo Pascal, sculptor Hartmut Zech, who designed the monument, puppeteer Pohl, and other guests will be present at the inauguration.
The monument is part of an initiative to erect a memorial for forgotten stage, film, and television artists. The meeting point for the inauguration is the upper parking lot at the Waldbuehne.
Admission to the unveiling of the monument is free, but admission to the ballad program costs 10 euros. Registration is required, and tickets can be booked online at www.puetz-roth.de.
Gerd J. Pohl hopes his initiative will encourage discussions about transience, a theme that resonates deeply in the world of performing arts, where works have a shorter lifespan than those of painters, sculptors, or authors. Once a theater performance ends, the artwork associated with it also ends, making each performance a fleeting moment in time.
In addition, a newsletter titled "The Day in GL" is sent every morning at 7:07 AM, keeping the community informed about local events and happenings.
This memorial for Gerd J. Pohl is a testament to his enduring impact on the world of theater and a reminder of the transient nature of the arts. It serves as an invitation to celebrate the works of great performers, appreciate their contributions, and reflect on the fleeting nature of their art.
