The Pogues' 40th Anniversary Reissue of 'Rum Sodomy & The Lash' Unveiled
The Pogues, the iconic Irish band known for their unique blend of punk and traditional Irish music, are set to release a newly-expanded reissue of their 1985 album, Rum Sodomy & The Lash. This 40th anniversary edition will be available in a two-LP vinyl edition and a two-CD set, with the CD edition hitting shelves on September 19, and the vinyl edition following in late October/November 2025.
The reissue will feature the original 1985 album, along with a second disc of bonus tracks. This bonus disc will compile 1986's Poguetry In Motion EP, a cover of The Lovin' Spoonful's Do You Believe In Magic (Rough Mix), four songs from a BBC Radio 1 session, and two live B-sides recorded at Glasgow Barrowland.
The tracklist for Disc 1 of the reissue includes 13 songs from the original album and two bonus tracks. The original tracks include favourites like The Sick Bed Of Cúchulainn, The Old Main Drag, Wild Cats Of Kilkenny, and I'm A Man You Don't Meet Every Day. The bonus tracks are Do You Believe in Magic? (Rough Mix) and The Parting Glass.
Interestingly, The Parting Glass and A Pistol For Paddy Garcia are not included in the tracklist for Disc 1 but are part of the bonus tracks on Disc 2. The Poguetry In Motion EP, which is included in Disc 2, contains the songs London Girl, A Rainy Night In Soho, The Body Of An American, and Planxty Noel Hill.
Disc 2 also includes live recordings of A Pair Of Brown Eyes and Sally MacLennane, both from Glasgow Barrowland. Other tracks on Disc 2 include The Parting Glass, A Pistol For Paddy Garcia, Dirty Old Town, Billy's Bones, and The Old Main Drag. Notably, Wild Cats Of Kilkenny is included in both Disc 1 and Disc 2.
The bonus disc of the reissue will also feature a broadcast of The Pogues' appearance on the Janice Long Show on BBC Radio 1, which was originally aired on July 11, 1985.
This expanded edition of Rum Sodomy & The Lash promises to be a treasure trove for fans, offering a glimpse into the band's early days and their evolution over the years. So, mark your calendars for September 19 (or October 24 for the vinyl edition in the US) and get ready to immerse yourself in the unique sound of The Pogues once again.
