PM welcomes President of Cuba's Prensa Latina news agency
Vietnam and Cuba have marked 65 years of diplomatic ties with a renewed commitment to media cooperation and economic support. Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính met with Jorge Legañoa Alonso, President of Cuba’s Prensa Latina news agency, to strengthen bilateral relations. The visit highlighted deep-rooted solidarity, including Vietnam’s recent donation of over VND650 billion (US$25 million) to Cuba under a friendship campaign.
During the reception, PM Chính passed on greetings to Cuban leaders, including President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez and Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz. He emphasised the importance of accurate, timely reporting to promote Vietnam-Cuba friendship and counter misinformation. Both sides agreed to protect shared ideological values through closer media collaboration.
Vietnam remains Cuba’s second-largest trade partner and its biggest investor from the Asia-Pacific region. Projects in food security, rice, corn, and aquaculture have directly benefited Cuban communities. The two nations also recalled Cuba’s vaccine support to Vietnam during the COVID-19 pandemic, reinforcing mutual aid.
The Vietnam News Agency (VNA) and Prensa Latina have maintained strong ties, with the Cuban agency training generations of Vietnamese journalists. VNA General Director Vũ Việt Trang and Legañoa Alonso discussed expanding cooperation under a 2023 agreement, focusing on multimedia training and coverage of key 2026 events. Legañoa Alonso requested further VNA support to develop a new generation of reporters, adapting to modern media demands.
PM Chính urged both agencies to explore new collaboration methods, including professional training and technology upgrades. Legañoa Alonso expressed pride in the long-standing partnership and pledged to deepen joint efforts in media and beyond.
The meeting reaffirmed Vietnam and Cuba’s commitment to media exchange and economic cooperation. With ongoing projects in agriculture and a shared focus on combating misinformation, the two nations aim to strengthen their bond. Future plans include expanded training programmes and joint coverage of major events in 2026.
