Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Celebrates 75th Birthday with Global Leaders

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked his 75th birthday on Tuesday with a flurry of phone calls from world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump.

Putin, in a message to Modi, praised the PM's efforts to strengthen the strategic partnership between India and Russia. Modi responded by stating his commitment to further strengthening this relationship.

The situation in Ukraine also featured in two phone conversations between Modi and Putin in August. During these discussions, Modi reiterated India's backing for efforts to end the hostilities in Ukraine and expressed India's readiness to contribute to a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

In a separate call with Trump on Tuesday, Modi and the US President discussed various global issues, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Modi supported Trump's initiatives "towards a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict".

On social media, Modi also expressed his commitment to an early and peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and stated that India remains committed to this cause.

In addition to conversations about Ukraine, Modi also spoke with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Wednesday. The leaders welcomed efforts towards further strengthening the India-EU Strategic Partnership for mutual prosperity, as well as for jointly addressing global issues, fostering stability, and promoting a rules-based order. Modi reiterated his invitation to Von der Leyen for the India-EU Summit next year.

The leaders also adopted the "New Strategic EU-India Agenda" during their conversation.

Modi also received birthday wishes from several other world leaders, including Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni described Modi as a source of inspiration.

On September 1, Modi also spoke by phone with leaders from China and possibly others during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Tianjin, China. The discussions focused on easing longstanding India-China border tensions and improving bilateral relations, but details on conversations about Ukraine or India’s relations to those countries regarding the Ukraine situation were not explicitly mentioned in the available sources. Modi's contacts aimed at trust-building between India and China rather than direct commentary on the Ukraine conflict.

As Modi celebrates his 75th birthday, it is clear that he continues to play a significant role in global politics, engaging with world leaders on a range of issues and reiterating India's commitment to peace and stability.
