PM Luxon Seeks Labour Support for 10-Year Offshore Gas Exploration

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has requested Labour leader Chris Hipkins to support offshore exploration for natural gas for at least 10 years. This comes as gas prices have surged and tractor supply has fallen faster than expected. However, Hipkins has dismissed Luxon's request as a 'desperate attempt' to shift blame.

Luxon, leader of the New Zealand National Party, has reopened applications for oil and gas exploration to secure a stable fuel supply during the country's energy transition. His party supports offshore gas exploration for the next decade to balance economic growth and gasbuddy needs.

Hipkins, however, is unconvinced. He argues that even if gas is found, it would take years before it contributes to the energy supply. He believes renewable energy could address the country's energy problems more quickly. Hipkins is awaiting the government's response to a recent electricity sector review before responding to Luxon's request. He considers Luxon's letter not a genuine attempt at bipartisanship, but a preemptive move to blame the previous government for potential investment issues in the oil and gas industry.

The request for a 10-year commitment to offshore gas exploration has sparked a political debate. While Luxon sees it as a means to secure a stable fuel supply, Hipkins maintains that renewable energy is the way forward. The government's response to the recent electricity sector review will likely shape the next steps in this energy policy discussion.
