Playwright Mukid Chy gets CUKC Award
Writer and playwright Shyamal Kumar Majumder, known by his pen name Mukid Chowdhury, has won the Cumilla Kabi Parishad Literary Award 2025. The honour recognises his outstanding contributions to stage theatre. The announcement came on December 18 from the organisation’s leaders.
Mukid Chowdhury is celebrated for his diverse works across Bengali literature. His notable play-novels and dramas include Ashtambasu-Dyu: Joddha, Atoi Falgun, Ashokananda, and Gomatir Upakhyan. He has also published short story collections like Trishito Tithi and Tirer Brikkhoraji, as well as poetry volumes such as Anahuto Otithi and Bisher Bindu. Beyond fiction, his research books, Italy: Adyanto Itihash and Germany: Otit Theke Bartoman, showcase his wide-ranging expertise.
Born to fiction writer Abdur Rauf Chowdhury and Shirin Chowdhury, Mukid Chowdhury has a deep connection to the new-stream Bangla Movement Theatre. His innovative approach to stagecraft has earned him a distinct place in contemporary Bengali drama. The award ceremony will take place in Dhaka on December 26. Chowdhury will receive the honour along with a cash prize, as confirmed by CUKC founder president R Mujib and president Abdul Latif.
The Cumilla Kabi Parishad Literary Award 2025 highlights Mukid Chowdhury’s influence on modern Bengali theatre. His works span plays, poetry, short stories, and research, reinforcing his reputation as a versatile literary figure. The ceremony on December 26 will formally acknowledge his achievements.
