Playoffs for the FedEx Cup: Changers and Eliminations Revealed
The first week of the FedEx Cup Playoffs has seen some significant movements in the standings, with several players improving their positions and others slipping down the rankings.
Jhonattan Vegas and Bud Cauley are among the players who have made impressive leaps. After a T14 finish in the playoff opener, Vegas moved from 56th to 49th, while Cauley improved from 53rd to 46th after his own T14 finish. However, Aldrich Potgieter, who recently won his maiden PGA Tour title, saw a drop from 43rd to 52nd after finishing T59th in Memphis.
Kurt Kitayama and Rickie Fowler also made notable improvements. Kitayama, who finished T9 in the opening event, moved from 52nd to 37th, while Fowler jumped from 64th to 48th. Unfortunately, Jordan Spieth's position for the US Ryder Cup is now in doubt after he fell from 48th to 54th in the FedEx Cup standings.
The BMW Championship, the next event in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, will take place at Baltimore's Caves Valley Golf Club. With 50 players remaining in the playoffs, the competition is heating up as players vie for a spot in all signature events for the next season.
Players finishing in the top 50 after the playoffs are guaranteed spots in all signature events for the next season. Those outside the top 50 must rely on other pathways like world rankings or sponsor exemptions. The playoffs also provide opportunities for players outside the top 50 to improve their standing and qualify for signature events through strong performances.
The FedEx Cup Playoffs are one week into their competition, and the stakes are high for the remaining events. Keegan Bradley will be responsible for picking the wildcard for the US Ryder Cup side, as Rory McIlroy's position is uncertain. Meanwhile, Wyndham Clark, the 2023 US Open champion, also saw his Ryder Cup position hang in the balance after he dropped from 49th to 56th.
