HB Ludwigsburg Faces Insolvency and Exits Women's Handball Bundesliga

HB Ludwigsburg, the German double winner in women's handball, has been forced to file for insolvency and release all players due to severe financial difficulties. The club, which moved to Ludwigsburg last year after celebrating great successes under its previous name SG BBM Bietigheim, is no longer able to continue in the women's handball Bundesliga.

The insolvency proceedings were initiated about two weeks ago, and since then, the existing financial gap has not been closed. As a result, the club will not participate in the EHF Champions League Women 2025/26, with Norwegian club Sola HK taking their place. The European Handball Federation (EHF) is pursuing legal action against HB Ludwigsburg and relevant German handball bodies due to registration and financial issues.

The German Women's Handball Bundesliga (HBF) has also withdrawn HB Ludwigsburg from the 2025 Handball Super Cup, replacing them with Thüringer HC. Despite these setbacks, Ludwigsburg is reportedly exploring the possibility of continuing on a smaller scale with a reduced budget for the 2025/26 season. However, no confirmed solution exists yet.

The decision to let all players go was made by the provisional insolvency administrator, Dr. Holger Leichtle, after careful consideration. The players have been informed of the plan to continue the project on a smaller scale, but the economic basis for HB Ludwigsburg to continue in the women's handball Bundesliga remains uncertain.

The club's board announced that no solution could be found to bridge the financial gap. The Handball Bundesliga Women (HBF) announced that opening an insolvency proceeding would result in a deduction of eight bonus points at the end of the regular season.

Despite their recent success, HB Ludwigsburg is currently facing financial difficulties. The club became champion and cup winner under its new name in the previous season, but it seems that their days in the women's handball Bundesliga have come to an end for now. It is still unclear what will happen next for HB Ludwigsburg.

In light of their ongoing financial struggles, HB Ludwigsburg, once a winner of the German double in women's handball, is no longer participating in sports such as football or the Champions League, as initially planned. Instead, this season, the EHF Champions League Women spot vacated by HB Ludwigsburg will be filled by the Norwegian club Sola HK.
