A terrifying moment transpired during a National Women's Soccer League match on Friday night, as a player succumbed to a sudden medical incident.
Angel City's defender, Savy King, encountered a "medical mishap" during their faceoff against the Utah Royals. The incident occurred in the 74th minute, leaving she herself and her teammates visibly rattled.
King unexpectedly collapsed on the field and was attended to for approximately ten minutes before being wheeled off on a stretcher. Reports suggest that Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) may have been administered, and an automated external defibrillator (AED) was utilized during the emergency response. The game was paused for several minutes while King was treated on the spot.

Photographs show medical personnel rushing to King's aid during both halves of the game.
Following the game, both teams and their staff banded together in a heartfelt prayer.
According to Angel City's official statement, "Savy was transported by EMS to the hospital following a medical event on the field. She is responsive and undergoing further evaluation." They also expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of support from fans. Alex Loera, a player from the opposing team, was tasked with leading the combined prayer, and graciously agreed.
Loera commented, "Obviously, Savy King is one of my close friends... Those moments are always so scary – we're all sending our thoughts and prayers to Savy King's family."
Utah's head coach, Jimmy Coenraets, expressed concern about continuing the game after the incident, which ultimately ended in a 2-0 victory for L.A. He voiced his displeasure about resuming play, saying, "I'm not sure we should have continued the game... it was a worrying moment." Coenraets also mentioned that many people were "distressed" after witnessing the event.
King, a 20-year-old native, was selected second overall in the 2024 NWSL draft by expansion Bay FC and played 18 games for the club. She was transferred to Angel City in February and has started in all eight games this season.
