Criticizing No Investment in Planten un Blomen's Maintenance
Regardless of its technical facilities, some dating back to pre-war times, Planten un Blomen park allegedly needs minimal investment, as per the Senate. In 2021, a substantial sum of over 1.2 million euros was set aside for park expansion, ice rink paving, and teahouse renovation in the Japanese Garden. However, the Senate responded that only 46,000 euros remained for teahouse renovations in 2022, and only 25,000 euros in "climate funds" were requested for an electric truck in 2023.
Left Party MP Stephan Jersch voiced suspicions, claiming that only visible damage was being repaired, while outdated technology, largely around 70 years old, was left untouched. According to Jersch, the risk of significant technology failure is increasing annually, necessitating a general overhaul and an estimation of the technology's lifespan to gain a realistic perspective.
Conversely, Hamburg's responsible district office in Mitte painted a more nuanced picture of the situation. It praised recent renovations, including the water playground, sound and light system, and ice rink, while acknowledging that several other areas required attention, such as playgrounds, paths, buildings, and outdated structures like pipes and buildings.
In its efforts to maintain the park's condition, the district office plans to repair the major leak at Parksee, restore the pumping station, and initiate renovations for all water basins and water technology, as well as the music pavilion and Seeterrassen café. The Café Seeterrassen, which has been abandoned for three years, was recently sold to the Mitte district office for renovation, causing a stir among conservationists.
Planten un Blomen's history dates back to the redesign of Hamburg's ramparts in 1820, receiving its current name in 1935. Throughout the years, the park has hosted local and international garden exhibitions.
