Plans to encircle Görlitzer Park with barriers face postponement
Görlitzer Park, a beloved public space in the heart of Berlin, is set to undergo significant changes. The Berlin Senate, led by Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU), has been insistent on constructing fences and gates around the park, a plan that has been met with controversy.
The initial plan was for the construction work to begin by the end of March 2024, but delays in the project's planning stage and the tendering out of construction contracts have pushed the start date back to summer 2024. This reality is a reflection of the long delays often experienced by building projects in Berlin.
The four million euro project aims to address crime in the park, but the controversy surrounding it is not solely due to the cost. Concerns about potential restrictions on public access and the possibility of displacing criminal activity to other parts of the city have been raised by demonstrators, who held signs reading "Görli stays up!" during a protest attended by approximately 200 people, where Mayor Wegner was met.
The district of Kreuzberg is also against the plan, echoing the concerns of the demonstrators. The case of the woman who reported being raped by several dealers in Görlitzer Park is still ongoing, adding to the urgency of addressing the issue of crime in the park.
Despite the potential opposition, the Berlin Senate remains determined to implement the plan. The project, which includes expanding the wall and setting up gates to close the area to the public at night, is a construction project in Berlin that has been the subject of ongoing debates for several years. These debates were recently brought back into the spotlight last year.
As the construction work approaches, the future of Görlitzer Park remains uncertain, with the controversy surrounding the project showing no signs of abating. The park, located in Berlin, will continue to be a focal point for discussions about balancing safety with public access in urban spaces.
