Dave Completes Te Araroa Trail with Son Baxter After Five-Month Journey

Dave Murray and his son Baxter have successfully completed the Te Araroa Trail, a 3000km hike from Ninety Mile Beach to Wellington, New Zealand. The trail, which typically takes around four months, took them five due to occasional interruptions.

Dave and Baxter started their hike in mid-October 2020 and finished in March 2021. Baxter, aged 14, joined his father, making their achievement remarkable as it's uncommon for young families to complete the Te Araroa Trail in its entirety.

Their journey had challenges. Covid-19 forced them to halt plans to return to Whanganui, but they completed the final section. Mark Weatherall, the Te Araroa Trail's Executive Director, followed their journey and believes their memories will always be cherished.

Throughout their hike, Dave and Baxter walked in rain for only five days. Dave's favorite day was between the South Island's Rakaia and Rangitata Rivers, while Baxter enjoyed "pretty much everywhere" for its variety.

Dave carried their tent, cooker, food, and a Personal Locator Beacon. Baxter carried technology and a spare cannister. They met only three fellow Kiwis doing the Te Araroa Trail.

Covid-19 impacted the number of walkers, with approximately 600 expected to complete the trail this season. Despite this, Dave and Baxter are among 1200 people who completed the Te Araroa Trail this season.

Dave learned a lot about Baxter during the hike and forgot he was a 14-year-old. Baxter found it a great bonding opportunity with his father.

The Te Araroa Trail, 'the long pathway' in Maori, is not frequently completed by young families. However, Dave and Baxter's achievement serves as an inspiration, showing that determination can conquer even the longest paths.
