Planned Controlled Burn Near St. Mary's College for Fire Hazard Mitigation - Locks Your Homes

Moraga, CA - Firefighters from the Moraga-Orinda Fire District (MOFD) are blazing a prescribed burn today, January 13, in the open space behind St. Mary's College practice fields. This fiery affair is part of the Tunnel/East Bay Hills Shaded Fuel Break project, an operation scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (if the air quality cooperates), aiming to diminish wildfire hazards, bolster native flora, and foster a thriving wildlife habitat.

The Tunnel/East Bay Hills Shaded Fuel Break project is all about reigning in the wildfire dangers by establishing zones with scant flammable materials, such as undersized trees, decaying foliage, and other fire-friendly elements. This strategic approach helps impede wildfires in their tracks, defending nearby communities, wildlife sanctuaries, and natural landscapes alike.

MOFD is working in close collaboration with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District to ensure the safety of the community and keep smoky impacts at bay during the burn operation.

Residents living closeby - including the Bollinger Canyon and St. Mary's College neighborhoods – might notice or catch a whiff of smoke during the burn. To ensure their cozy abodes remain smoke-free, residents are encouraged to close their exterior doors and windows.

Meteorological conditions are under constant vigilance. If the weather turns hostile, the burn will be abruptly halted and rescheduled. Here, MOFD's safety mantra takes center stage.
