A devastating plane crash in Washington D.C. on Wednesday night has left the figure skating community in mourning, with at least 13 skaters, including former world champions Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, believed to be among the victims.

The crash, which involved a passenger plane operated by American Airlines and a US Army helicopter, resulted in the loss of all 64 passengers and crew on the jet, as well as the three personnel on the helicopter. Among the victims were at least five people with ties to Charlotte, but no mention has been made of Shishkova, Naumov, or other sports figures in the reports.

The plane, carrying a total of 67 passengers and crew, was reportedly returning from a camp for the US figure skating championships in Kansas. American figure skater Luke Wang confirmed several skaters were on board the plane, but their identities have yet to be confirmed.

The crash occurred on a fateful night, claiming the lives of many talented athletes, coaches, and family members. Among the confirmed victims was a flight attendant known for comforting fearful passengers, the captain and first officer with personal aspirations, and a mother from Charlotte with two young boys.

The International Skating Union expressed their condolences for the loss of figure skaters and their families, friends, and coaches. US Figure Skating also issued a statement, expressing their devastation over the unspeakable tragedy and holding the victims' families closely in their hearts.

Ilia Malinin, the reigning world and national champion in men's figure skating, paid tribute to those lost in the fatal collision on Instagram. Meanwhile, Shishkova and Naumov, who won the world championships in pairs figure skating in 1994, did not appear among the listed victims of the American Airlines crash in 2025.

In a poignant twist, the skaters' winning routine was set to Johann Strauss II's Overture to the opera Die Fledermaus, a fitting tribute to the fleeting nature of life and the enduring spirit of those who have left us too soon.

As the figure skating community grieves, investigations into the cause of the crash continue, with the hope that answers will be found to bring some semblance of closure to the families and friends of those who were lost.
