Filter or Feminism: What Social Media Does to Girls - Plan International Highlights Social Media Challenges for Girls on International Day of the Girl

Social media, while offering platforms for political engagement, presents unique challenges for girls and women. On the International Day of the Girl (October 11), Plan International illuminates landmarks in pink to highlight these issues, including misinformation hindering political participation and online violence. Traditional notions of femininity resurface, and antifeminist movements spread, endangering both women and men.

Girls are often excluded from societal discussions when they don't express their opinions online. However, social media can hinder their engagement due to misinformation and the pressure to perform. In 2025, there's a focus on protecting girls from early and forced marriage. Yet, 70% of girls and women online have experienced violence, including body shaming. Surveys show women are less likely to express political opinions online, indicating persistent structural barriers despite social media's potential for participation. Intensive use can also lead to insecurities, low self-esteem, and pressure to conform.

On the International Day of the Girl, we must address these challenges. Social media regulation, like the EU's efforts to combat hate speech and disinformation, is crucial. Yet, balancing freedom of expression remains controversial. We must also promote digital literacy and safe online spaces for girls and women to engage politically and socially.
