Placer County community under evacuation warning as South Yuba River waters rise

Heavy rain and warm temperatures have triggered sudden flooding along the South Yuba River in California. The rapid snowmelt and downpours sent water surging down the Sierra, catching residents off guard. Roads, homes, and forested areas are now under threat as the river swells to unusual levels for this season.

The warm rain quickly melted what little snow remained in the Sierra, causing a rush of water down the mountainside. Along Interstate 80, drivers reported hearing a low rumble as the South Yuba River surged with the extra flow. The river’s rapids have become extremely dangerous, now classified as Class VI—too hazardous even for experienced rafters.

One home near the river was completely surrounded by fast-moving water, turning it into an isolated island. Nine people inside had to be rescued by Truckee fire crews after becoming stranded. Meanwhile, waterfalls have formed in unexpected places, and floodwaters are spilling onto roads and into the river.

Local authorities are taking action to prepare for worsening conditions. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office has moved resources into place and issued an evacuation warning for the Cisco Grove area. CalTrans is urging drivers to fit tyre chains due to the treacherous conditions. Even long-time residents have expressed shock at how high the river has risen, especially at this time of year.

More rain is forecast for Tuesday night, raising concerns that the situation could escalate further. Officials are advising residents to stay alert and monitor updates closely.

The South Yuba River remains at dangerous levels, with flooding already affecting homes, roads, and forests. With additional rain expected, emergency services are on standby, and residents are being urged to prepare for possible evacuations. The rapid changes in water levels have left many in the area concerned about what comes next.
