Pizza Cat cherished by Al Udeid is thriving and secure, claims the base.
Al Udeid Air Base's Feline Mascot, Pizza Cat, Continues to Delight Troops
In the heart of Qatar, on Al Udeid Air Base, a stray calico cat named Pizza Cat has become an unofficial mascot and a beloved figure among the 10,000 U.S. troops and civilians. This feline has been a part of the community since at least 2016, earning her nickname by frequently lounging near the base’s Pizza Hut.
Pizza Cat's role in boosting morale is significant, especially during challenging deployments marked by extreme desert heat, missile threats, and regional tensions. Her consistent appearances and friendly demeanor have made her a neighbourhood icon and a symbol of normalcy and companionship amidst stressful conditions.
Recent rumours circulating earlier this year suggested that base officials had directed Pizza Cat to be put down. However, these rumours have been refuted, and Al Udeid’s leadership has confirmed that there are no plans to remove or harm Pizza Cat. Capt. Trevor Wood, chief of public affairs at Al Udeid's 379th Air Expeditionary Wing, officially stated that Pizza Cat remains safe and continues to freely roam the base.
While some of her regular spots are kept confidential for operational security reasons, Pizza Cat can often be found near the Pizza Hut and wandering throughout the installation. One service member shared, "Anytime someone comes across Pizza Cat on base, typically their first reaction is to exclaim, 'Pizza Cat!' followed by pulling out their phone to take a picture of her."
Pizza Cat's notoriety has extended beyond the base, with the unofficial Air Force subreddit frequently featuring "proof of life" photos of her. She was even promoted to the rank of "Meowster Sergeant" on May 16, 2022.
Despite not being an official part of the base, Pizza Cat plays a crucial role in controlling the mice population and occasionally helps with pigeon control. Al Udeid Air Base, home to the forward headquarters of U.S. Central Command and U.S. Air Forces Central, and the Combined Air Operations Center, is grateful for Pizza Cat's contributions.
Despite the operational security concerns, Pizza Cat's story continues to bring joy to the troops at Al Udeid Air Base, reminding them of the small comforts and familiar faces that make their challenging deployments a little easier.
