Pittsburgh prepares for first snowfall as crews mobilize overnight

The Pittsburgh area braces for its first snowfall of the season, expected overnight Sunday into Monday morning. Allegheny County road crews are ready, with 17 salt trucks and plows on standby to keep county-maintained roads clear.

Property owners in Allegheny County are reminded of their responsibility to remove snow or ice from sidewalks adjacent to their properties. PennDOT advises drivers to be cautious and patient during winter weather events, with snow routes taking approximately two hours to clear, but heavy snowfall may extend these times.

Drivers are urged to keep a safe distance from salt and plow trucks to ensure their safety and effectiveness. Following too closely can lead to damage from flying salt or cause drivers to spin out. Even without snow, fallen leaves combined with dropping temperatures can create slick driving conditions, so extra caution is advised, especially on bridges and ramps during the first watch.

The public can use an online tool to find out who is responsible for clearing snow or ice from their road in Allegheny County. Road crews are prepared to handle the winter-like weather, and drivers are encouraged to be extra cautious during the first watch.
