Pitcher Gerrit Cole of the Yankees performs 20 throws on level ground as part of his recovery from Tommy John surgery.

Gerrit Cole, the Yankees' ace and $324 million man, took a significant step forward in his recovery from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. On August 11, 2025, Cole began throwing off flat ground, marking a key milestone in his rehabilitation process.

Cole's surgery was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache on March 11, 2025, and he had been building up to this moment for the past few weeks. The normal rehabilitation time for Tommy John surgery is approximately 14 months, and Cole is following a similar timeline.

Cole's recovery involves the use of an internal brace to protect his elbow during the first year of rehabilitation. After flat ground throwing, he will gradually progress to pitching off a mound, followed by a shutdown period and a usual offseason rest before returning to competitive play. His target for a full return is around mid-May 2026, aiming for early in the 2026 MLB season.

Cole reported feeling good about his progress, stating that he was fairly accurate and enjoyed the session. Fans and teammates alike are hopeful that Cole will return to form and help the Yankees in their quest for another championship.
