Rough Talks in Kyiv: Pistorius Pledges More Aid as Russia Pounds Ukraine

Pistorius Arrives in Kiev for Discussions on Additional Military Support

In a blunt response to intensified Russian air attacks, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, upon his arrival in Kyiv, slammed the barrage as "extraordinarily heavy and threatening" with the massive usage of cruise missiles and drone attacks.

Upon his meeting with Ukrainian officials, Pistorius expressed his desire to expand military aid to Ukraine further. He emphasized the need to discuss how Germany and other European nations can extend their support in the form of industrial cooperation, as well as various other means [1].

This visit by Pistorius underlines the new federal government's unwavering backing for Ukraine. As he stated, "Of course, it will be about how the support of Germany and other Europeans will look in the future."

The Russian Kremlin seemed to take notice, seeing the SPD politician's stance as a clear signal of no interest in a peaceful solution right now, but rather an escalated assault on civilian Ukrainian areas [2].

Meanwhile, ongoing Russian attacks have targeted various regions of Ukraine for over a month. Notably, the most recent drone attack at the beginning of the week has been the most extensive since the onset of the war. The assault reportedly involved 479 combat drones of the Shahed type, 4 hypersonic missiles of the Kinzhal type, 14 different cruise missiles, and 2 air-to-ground missiles of the Ch-31 type [3].

Amidst this, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selenskyj accused Russia of harboring ambitions beyond officially recognized aims. He pointed out that Russia's military efforts in the Odessa region are not mere isolated actions but part of a larger plan to seize a corridor to Romania [4]. This move would weaken Europe as a whole, as Russia aims to create chaos in the region.

Back in March, high-ranking General Rustam Minnekayev announced Moscow's control over the south of Ukraine and the land route to the region of Transnistria, which has seceded from Moldova, as war objectives [5]. The Kremlin, however, has yet to officially comment on this.
