After a staggering 12-26 start this season, the MLB's first managerial castration went down in the form of Derek Shelton's axing from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
It's been a rough ride for the Pirates since their brief postseason flirtation a whole decade ago. With young blood like Paul Skenes, Oneil Cruz, Bryan Reynolds, Ke'Bryan Hayes and more, the team has failed to meet expectations.
Skenes, in an unexpectedly candid confession, mentioned that he wasn't shocked by the move. Speaking to journalists on Friday, he proclaimed, "We're 12-26. Someone's gotta be held accountable. Unfortunately, right now, it's him."
However, Skenes warns that a managerial swap won't magically cure the disease because ultimately, the team's performance boils down to the players. He went on to add, "Just how it goes. I don't know if it fixes the root of the issue. We just need to play better."
In a heartfelt public statement, Pirates General Manager Ben Cherington praised Derek, acknowledging the countless hours he put into the job. Cherington stated, "Derek exhibited great intelligence, curiosity, and determination as a baseball leader. I believed he was the right choice when he was hired. Yet, I also believe that now a change is necessary. I wish Derek and his family a bright future."
Taking over the helm going forward is Don Kelly, the recently appointed bench coach.
"Derek is a good man, who did a lot for the Pirates and Pittsburgh, but it was time for a change," Pirates Chairman Bob Nutting commented. "The dismal run during the first quarter of the season has been agonizing for all of us. We must act swiftly and decisively to turn this around and get back on track."
Last summer, the Pirates were in contention before finalizing with a 76-86 record.
