Pigeon Conservationists Rally Support with Citizens' Petition
Following the city council's controversial decision to cull Limburg's urban pigeons, animal rights advocates are gearing up to launch a citizens' petition. The Limburg city pigeon project is urging supporters to sign a petition via Facebook, under the slogan "Put a Stop to Pigeon Killing!". The goal is to overturn the decision that appeared in November, when majority council members voted in favor of reducing the pigeon population using neck-breaking methods. A city spokesperson confirmed that at least 2,672 eligible voter signatures are required to enforce a referendum.
The controversy surrounding Limburg's pigeons has been a hot topic for some time, triggering a wave of protests. Council representatives were met with a barrage of emails and social media posts, including threats of legal action, which the city deemed an unacceptable overstep. According to the resolution, the killing is scheduled to last only two years, after which an analysis will be conducted to assess the need for population control methods, such as supervised pigeon birth control within controlled breeding facilities.
As the debate rages on, animal rights activists in Hesse are considering launching their own citizens' petition in response to local plans to harm animal species. On Facebook, several animal welfare groups have launched pages dedicated to sharing information related to the Limburg situation and petitioning supporters to take action. Meanwhile, municipalities in Hesse are reevaluating their wildlife management policies, considering alternative, humane solutions to pigeon populations, such as non-lethal deterrents and birth control programs.

The non-lethal solutions refer to using deterrents such as decoy kites, lasers, and netting to discourage pigeons from landing and roosting on buildings. Additionally, exclusion methods like wire mesh and bird wires can be used to block potential entry points. Population control techniques like OvoControl, which causes birds to lay unsuccessful eggs, can limit flock sizes. Lastly, good sanitation practices, using cinnamon, peppermint oil, or cayenne pepper, and humane deterrents, such as scarecrows and pigeon-proof feeders, can all contribute to the humane management of pigeon populations.
