Pierre Maudet received funds from false donors
In Geneva, a political politico supporting the campaign of Pierre Maudet during the 2023 Council of States election faced penalties for breaching transparency regulations. The State Chancellery issued a fine of CHF 2,000 and ordered the association to repay more than CHF 24,000, primarily for poster costs, and an additional CHF 10,000 as a contribution to the election campaign costs.
The violation stemmed from the acceptance of donations under pseudonyms, a practice that is prohibited by law. The news was uncovered by RTS, which reported on possible anonymous donations during the 2023 State Council election, triggering administrative proceedings.
The identity of the donors who used pseudonyms remains undisclosed, but names of long-deceased Geneva politicians, such as James Fazy, were among those who made donations under pseudonyms. This revelation adds to the controversy surrounding the association's funding.
Pierre Maudet, the individual the association was supporting, was previously voted out in a by-election for the State Council in 2021. Following his resignation due to a controversial trip to Abu Dhabi, he founded the Libertés et Justice sociale (LJS) movement, distancing himself from the FDP party. Maudet returned to the Geneva government in 2023.
The specific transparency regulations violated in this case are not specified. However, the use of anonymous or pseudonymous donations is a clear breach of the electoral transparency rules, intended to ensure fairness and accountability in political funding.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency in political funding and the consequences of non-compliance with electoral regulations. It is crucial for political associations and candidates to adhere to the law to maintain trust and credibility with the public.
