McLaren's Piastri Takes the Lead in World Championship

Oscar Piastri bagged the win at the Spanish Grand Prix, putting him 10 points ahead of his McLaren teammate Lando Norris in the World Championship. Charles Leclerc settled for a content third place, while George Russell finished fourth.

But the biggest celebrities on the trackside weren't the drivers. The entire English football national team, including Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham, were there, thanks to their team boss, Thomas Tuchel.

The footballers witnessed Piastri dominating the start, preserving his lead position, and Verstappen making a bold move to bypass Norris. The four-time world champion from the Netherlands arrived early for his first pit stop, took the lead from Piastri, and then things got messy.

Alonso's Long Drought and Kimi Antonelli's Mishap

Despite tactical maneuvers, it was no use against Piastri and Norris. After the phase of the second pit stops, the duo reclaimed their lead positions and seemed on course for a comfortable victory and second place. But then, young gun Kimi Antonelli skidded into the gravel with a fault in his Mercedes, prompting a safety car. Most drivers headed to the pits, swapping their tires. Verstappen opted for hard (white) tires when everybody else chose soft (red). "Why the bloody hell did you do that?" Verstappen inquired over the radio. His team explained that it was the only viable option left.

Verstappen's Turbulent Finish

The last choice proved disastrous for Verstappen. At the restart, his car spun out. Leclerc scooted past the 27-year-old in the Ferrari. Then, Verstappen should have given his position back to George Russell, but he lost his nerves and sideswiped the Briton's car instead. Russell just barely managed to avoid a crash. Only then did Verstappen allow Russell to overtake him.

The Penalty and Implications

The incident led to significant consequences. Verstappen was hit with a ten-second penalty, dropping him from fifth place to tenth. In addition, Verstappen gained three penalty points on his FIA super license, bringing his total to 11 points. Accumulating 12 points within a year results in an automatic race ban, causing Verstappen to teeter on the brink and face mounting pressure to avoid further penalties and a potential ban in upcoming races.
