Phú Quốc's An Thới Port gets $24M upgrade to boost fishing and exports
An Thới Fishing Port in Phú Quốc is set for a major upgrade as part of a VNĐ600 billion (US$24 million) modernisation project. The initiative aims to transform the deteriorating facility into a key logistics hub for the island's growing marine economy. Officials say the improvements will help fishermen access better prices, reduce losses, and expand export opportunities.
The port currently suffers from outdated infrastructure, with many facilities failing to meet basic logistics needs. Fishermen face difficulties in berthing, unloading, and preserving their catches, leading to higher post-harvest losses. The upgrade will introduce cold storage, processing zones, and integrated logistics services to improve seafood quality and reduce waste.
A modernised system of wharves and reinforced anchorage areas will allow vessels to dock safely during storms, cutting risks at sea and saving fuel. The project also includes expanded trade and service facilities, which are expected to boost local tourism and create new jobs. Once completed, the port will serve as a central hub for seafood buyers and exporters, helping fishermen secure better prices for their catches.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment is finalising approval procedures for the project. While no exact number of large fishing fleets in Phú Quốc is available, the port's upgrade aligns with broader efforts to strengthen Vietnam's marine economy. Nationwide, over 79,000 fishing vessels are registered, with more than 46,000 over 6m participating in tracking systems.
The upgraded An Thới Fishing Port will support Phú Quốc's long-term economic strategy by improving fisheries logistics and fishermen's livelihoods. It will also reduce operational costs, enhance export capabilities, and generate additional income through trade and tourism. The project marks a key step in developing the island as a major marine economic centre.
