Phoenix Mercury's Alyssa Thomas delivers an outstanding triple-double, securing a victory over New York Liberty and toppling their reign.

In a thrilling playoff game on Friday night, the Phoenix Mercury defeated the New York Liberty 79-73, securing their place in the WNBA playoff semifinals. The game was a close contest, with the lead changing hands 13 times in the first three quarters. The Mercury managed to take a narrow 60-59 lead into the fourth quarter, a lead they never relinquished. Alyssa Thomas, the Mercury's star player, put in a dominant performance, recording the first 20-point triple-double in WNBA postseason history. She finished the game with 23 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists, making history in the process. Thomas' performance was praised by Breanna Stewart, who described her as a 'nightmare all over the court.' Nate Tibbetts, the Mercury head coach, also commended Thomas, stating that she impacts the game in many ways and has a strong desire to win. Stewart herself was also in fine form, scoring 30 points despite a sprained MCL in her left knee. This ties Diana Taurasi for the most 30+ point games in playoff history with eight. Kahleah Copper and Sabrina Ionescu were the top scorers for the Liberty, contributing 12 points and 22 points respectively. However, no other Liberty player managed more than eight points, which proved crucial in the Mercury's victory. Satou Sabally added 23 points, 12 rebounds, and three assists for the Mercury, while Sami Whitcomb chipped in with 13 points. The Mercury's victory marks their first playoff series win since 2021. They will now face the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx in the semifinals. The Lynx have already advanced to the semifinals, having beaten the Golden State Valkyries in two games. The best-of-five series between Phoenix and Minnesota starts at Target Center on Sunday. It promises to be an exciting match-up, with both teams boasting strong rosters and a desire to reach the WNBA Finals.
