Phoenix Mercury, led by Alyssa Thomas, racing high in WNBA standings with revised roster

In the 2025 WNBA season, Alyssa Thomas, nicknamed "The Engine," has become a driving force for the Phoenix Mercury, leading them to a fourth place in the league standings at 21-13.

Thomas, acquired via an offseason sign-and-trade deal, has thrived in the new team, fitting in perfectly with first-year coach Nate Tibbets' pace-and-space style. The Mercury's rebuilding process has proven to be a perfect fit for the versatile forward.

Thomas' impact in Tibbets' offense is evident in her playmaking abilities, making her the WNBA's most prolific distributing forward. This season, she has set a new WNBA single-season record for assists with 316, placing her seventh on the league's all-time assists list - the only forward in the top 10.

In addition to her playmaking, Thomas has been revving all season and taking the Mercury with her. She is currently third in the WNBA with 8.6 rebounds per game and second on the Mercury at 16.1 points. Her assist average has nearly doubled her career average, leading the league with a league-leading 9.0 this season.

Thomas' impressive performance has earned her the sixth All-Star nod in her career, in her first season with the Mercury. Her impact extends beyond the court, as she helped in the design process for her NASCAR appearance.

Thomas' image will be featured on a NASCAR hood by Castrol for an upcoming race. The Phoenix Mercury star's NASCAR, the RFK Racing's No. 60 Castrol Ford, will be driven by Ryan Preece.

Thomas' career in the WNBA began with the Connecticut Sun, where she spent her first 11 seasons. During her tenure, she led the Sun to two WNBA Finals, earned five All-Star nods, three all-WNBA team selections, and five all-defensive team selections.

Thomas' impressive career started at Maryland, where she was a three-time ACC player of the year and an All-American her senior season. Her college success has translated to her professional career, making her one of the most decorated players in the WNBA.

With Thomas leading the charge, the Phoenix Mercury are poised for a strong finish in the 2025 season. As Tibbets focuses on winning, pace, and strong leadership, the Mercury are poised to make a deep playoff run. Thomas, with her career-high 54.3% shooting from the floor this season, is ready to continue her impressive performance and lead the Mercury to success.
