In Raphaela Edelbauer's latest novel, "The Genuine Reality," we delve into a world where intellectual activists strive to restore truth in an era characterized by conspiracy theories, disinformation, and lies. This novel, a blend of literature, philosophy, and natural sciences, is one of the most innovative works in Austrian contemporary literature.

The story unfolds in a time when a young chancellor with high poll numbers is rising in Austria, and Donald Trump first enters the political stage. The intellectual activist group Aletheia, comprising a rebellious heiress of an empire, a flickering student initially attracted by the offer of free accommodation, and others, believe that the dissolution of the concept of truth into power structures and cultural techniques has contributed to the current disaster.

The head of the think-tank in the novel is a failed philosophy professor who remained unfulfilled in his hope for a permanent academic position. Byproxy, a young woman with quadriplegia, joins the group, bringing her unique perspective to their cause. Notably, the "Surgeon," a character with relevant knowledge of explosives gained from various resistance movements, also plays a significant role.

The intellectual activists' initial actions are harmless pranks and artistic actions to call the public to reason. However, as the situation worsens, they become determined to use violence to restore truth to its rightful place. Byproxy programs a computer game to think backwards from a certain event to its cause, a move that raises ethical questions about the means justifying the ends.

The novel takes a critical look at the post-truth era, diagnosing its birth from the spirit of modern skepticism. It also compares the intellectual activists' violent actions to earlier resistance movements, offering a thought-provoking perspective on contemporary politics and society.

"The Genuine Reality" is a 448-page novel that costs 28 Euro. It features the Laplace's Demon, a philosophical concept, as one of its many intellectual themes. If you're interested in exploring this intriguing narrative, "The Genuine Reality" is a must-read.

Raphaela Edelbauer, known for her previous works such as "The End of Eddy," delivers a compelling narrative that combines intellectual depth with robust storytelling. Her latest work is a testament to her unique voice in Austrian literature.
