Philly Phanatic delivers a decisive 4-run 8th inning blast with his 42nd homer, leading the Phillies to a thrilling 4-1 win over the Reds
In a thrilling contest at Great American Ball Park, the Philadelphia Phillies managed to secure their fourth consecutive win, moving six games ahead of the idle New York Mets in the National League East.
The game started with a bang as TJ Friedl of the Reds doubled and scored the team's only run in the first inning, thanks to an RBI single from Gavin Lux. However, the Phillies responded in the eighth inning, with Kyle Schwarber, born in Middletown, Ohio, hitting a two-run homer to take the lead. Schwarber, who has the most career home runs (13) at Great American Ball Park among all road ballparks, now leads the National League with 42 home runs for the season. Weston Wilson and Trea Turner also contributed with RBI doubles in the same inning.
Orion Kerkering of the Phillies pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his third save, sealing the victory for his team. The Phillies' starting pitcher, Taijuan Walker, also had a solid outing, allowing only one run in his six innings of work.
On the other side, Andrew Abbott of the Reds had been pitching well, allowing only one run through seven innings. Unfortunately, he struggled in the eighth, allowing three hits and two runs. Despite this, Jordan Romano earned the victory for the Phillies, improving his record to 2-4.
Looking ahead, the upcoming match on Tuesday will feature a fascinating pitching matchup. The Phillies will send LHP Ranger Suárez (8-5, 2.94 ERA) to the mound, while the Reds will counter with RHP Brady Singer (9-9, 5.43 ERA).
Meanwhile, in the home run race, Cal Raleigh of Seattle leads both the American League and Major League Baseball with 45 home runs, one ahead of Schwarber. The race for the National League East title is heating up, and the Phillies are showing no signs of slowing down.
