Philippines Set to Compete in 5th World Beach Sambo Championships in Singapore

The Philippines will be represented by a team of athletes in the 5th World Beach Sambo Championships, taking place on August 2 and 3 at the YCK Complex Beach Volleyball Court in Singapore. This marks the second participation of the Philippine team in the World Beach Sambo Championships.

The team, led by Sydney Sy Tancontian, a multi-medalist in World Sambo, will consist of three men and two women. Janry Pamor, Cresente Navares, and Aumagel Princess Cortez will compete in the men's categories, while Faiza Jeninna Asilum and Jeniva Consigna will represent the women.

Sydney, who has won bronze medals in the women's +80kg division at the Grand Prix de Sambo de Paris and the World Sambo Cup in Armenia, will lead the team. In the Philippines' debut at the tournament in 2024 in Morocco, Sydney and Jeniva Consigna won two bronze medals.

Day one of the Championships will feature individual matches across eight weight categories. Day two will highlight the mixed team event. The Championships are being held for the first time in Asia, making it a significant milestone for the sport.

Paolo Tancontian, president of Pilipinas Sambo Federation Inc. and Sydney's father, stated that the team aims for stronger finishes this year. The Championships will feature athletes from 19 countries, making it a global event that showcases the best of beach Sambo.
