Philippines Sends 905 Athletes to SEA Games, Aims for Top Spot
Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Richard Bachmann is optimistic about the country's chances at the upcoming 32nd Southeast Asian Games. With 905 athletes and 257 officials set to compete in Cambodia, the Philippines aims to build on its previous performance. Bachmann plans to fund facility renovations and determine monetary remuneration for national sporting associations.
The Philippines will send a strong contingent to the 32nd SEA Games, a significant increase from the 656 athletes who competed in the previous edition. Many athletes will travel directly from abroad, with the PSC ensuring a smooth journey. Bachmann hopes to improve on the fourth-place finish in 2022, where the Philippines secured 226 medals.
Bachmann plans to create a matrix involving national sports associations to determine monetary remuneration. This will consider factors such as Olympic sports status and medal tally. The PSC works with the National Academy of Sports and other sports bodies for organizational structure and funding decisions. Post-SEA Games, the PSC will renovate facilities in Manila, Pasig, and Baguio.
Richard Bachmann, in his four-month stint as sports minister, will attend the entire SEA Games event. He expressed confidence in the Philippines' national athletes' capability to secure medals. With the SEA Games providing an opportunity for observation and learning, Bachmann seeks funding assistance from San Miguel and the MVP Group for facility renovations.
