Philippines launches major airport upgrades to boost travel and economy

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has reaffirmed the government’s push to upgrade airports across the Philippines. Speaking on 17 January 2026, he highlighted the role of modern transport infrastructure in driving economic growth and regional development. Several key airports are now undergoing expansion and modernisation to improve travel efficiency and connectivity.

Major upgrades are underway at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) under a public-private partnership. The project aims to make travel faster, safer, and more efficient for millions of passengers each year.

A new terminal is being built at Caticlan Airport to better serve both domestic and international news travellers. Meanwhile, Siargao Airport will soon feature a modular Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) to enhance passenger experience and support local tourism. In Mindanao, Davao International Airport is expanding with a new international PTB to boost trade and travel capacity. Similar upgrades are planned for Laguindingan Airport in Misamis Oriental and Bohol Panglao International Airport. These projects, also involving public-private partnerships, will strengthen air links in the Visayas and Mindanao. President Marcos urged private sector partners to work with the government in sustaining aviation-led initiatives. He stressed that improved infrastructure would create more opportunities for Filipinos and help build a more connected country.

The government’s focus on airport modernisation and transport upgrades continues as part of its broader economic strategy. With new terminals and expanded facilities, the projects aim to increase capacity, improve passenger services, and support regional growth across the Philippines.
