Philippines President's State Visit to India Strengthens Bilateral Ties

Philippines President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr is currently on a five-day state visit to India, marking the first such visit since he assumed office in 2022. The visit, which aligns with the celebration of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations, is expected to further strengthen the bilateral partnership.

The visit came following an invitation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. President Marcos Jr was welcomed with a warm reception by the Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, and was also greeted by President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Modi at the ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.

However, it is known that the key topics discussed included defense and security cooperation, trade and economic ties, people-to-people exchanges, digital and physical connectivity, health and pharmaceuticals, agriculture, tourism, and regional peace and maritime interests.

The discussions aimed to bring concrete benefits to the Filipino people, such as affordable medicine and enhanced food security. The visit also highlighted the first joint maritime exercises between India and the Philippines near the South China Sea, underscoring the shared maritime security concerns in a region involving China.

President Marcos Jr will continue his visit by meeting Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare JP Nadda, Karnataka Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot, and will lay a wreath at Rajghat on Tuesday. He will also have talks with PM Modi at the Hyderabad House on Tuesday.
