In a significant development for Thailand's political landscape, the Pheu Thai Party is reportedly considering Nuttaphong Kunakornwong, the CEO of SC Asset Corporation and the husband of Pintongta Shinawatra Kunakornwong, as a potential prime ministerial candidate for the upcoming general election.

Nuttaphong's visit to Thaksin Shinawatra, the former premier and Pheu Thai's founding leader, at Klongprem Central Prison on August 22, 2023, marked a significant moment. During the visit, letters written by Thaksin's grandchildren were handed to him.

Thaksin was transferred to the Police General Hospital earlier that month, following complaints of chest pain. After spending about six months in the hospital's premium ward, he was released on parole. However, the Supreme Court later ruled that Thaksin must serve a one-year prison sentence, rejecting his request for hospital time to count as part of his incarceration.

Phumtham Wechayachai, a key Pheu Thai figure, expressed optimism that the party will win the next election, either as the number one or two party. Regarding Nuttaphong's potential role, Phumtham stated that it is best for Pintongta to continue with her business management role. He also mentioned that he will ask Nuttaphong whether he has any interest in politics before considering him as a prime ministerial candidate.

Pintongta, Thaksin's eldest daughter, has been speculated as a possible successor for her younger sister, former prime minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. However, it seems that the party is looking beyond the immediate family for their next leader.

Khunying Potjaman na Pombejra, Thaksin's former wife, visited the Pheu Thai party headquarters to offer moral support. Her visit came as a show of unity amidst the party's preparations for the upcoming election.

Nuttaphong, along with his wife and Thaksin's other daughter and son-in-law, visited Thaksin during the non-contact visit through a glass partition. The visit provided an opportunity for the family to stay connected despite the challenging circumstances.

Despite the speculation, Nuttaphong declined to comment on the matter of becoming a prime ministerial candidate. As the election approaches, the Pheu Thai Party continues its preparations, with potential candidates under consideration. The party's choice will undoubtedly have a significant impact on Thailand's political future.
