"Pforzheim's Mini Olympic Games" or "Olympic-Style Events Held in Pforzheim"
Pforzheim, Germany, played host to a unique sports and cultural exchange event last Friday, as the city welcomed guests from its French partner city, Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, for the Mini-Olympiad. This biennial event aims to bring youth from both cities together in a friendly competition, fostering understanding and appreciation of each other's cultures and promoting intercultural dialogue.
The Mini-Olympiad is one of several joint activities between Pforzheim and Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, which have been ongoing since their twinning arrangement was established. The event, themed "Moving more together," focused on lived inclusion and was held on the sports field of FSV Buckenberg.
The event was funded by the Franco-German Citizens' Fund, a low-threshold initiative co-financed by the German and French governments and implemented by the Franco-German Youth Office (DFJW). This fund supports projects that make the Franco-German friendship and Europe tangible to a broad section of the population.
The 18- to 22-year-old guests from Saint-Maur-des-Fossés live in a boarding school of the educational organization "ARERAM," a vocational training facility for people with cognitive impairments. The event provided an opportunity for athletes from both cities to forge new connections and break down barriers, as they competed in various disciplines such as agility course, long throw, and relay race.
Social Mayor Frank Fillbrunn expressed his gratitude to the many volunteers who made the event possible and was pleased that the Mini-Olympiad was being held in Pforzheim. He emphasized that direct exchange fosters awareness of inclusion and strengthens community engagement.
The day culminated with the presentation of medals to the teams by Social Mayor Fillbrunn, symbolizing the spirit of friendly competition and camaraderie that the Mini-Olympiad embodies. After the sporting activities, participants had the opportunity to exchange ideas at a joint barbecue, further cementing the bonds formed during the event.
