Pforzheim city resounded with the blaring of sirens on Thursday.

On September 14, 2023, the city of Pforzheim will participate in a nationwide Civil Defense Drill, joining cities across Germany in testing and improving emergency preparedness. The drill is scheduled to take place at 11 a.m.

The purpose of these nationwide drills is to evaluate the readiness of emergency services, test communication systems, educate the public, and enhance resilience of critical infrastructure and communities. In Pforzheim, the drill will focus on testing the city's siren warning system, which has been in place for many years and is still considered necessary.

The city will spend around 200,000 euros on the renovation of its siren network, ensuring it remains effective and reliable. During the drill, all 40 sirens in Pforzheim will be activated simultaneously.

In case of an actual emergency, a one-minute steady tone from the sirens indicates immediate danger. Following the siren signal, residents should tune their radios to a local, public, or private radio station for further instructions. The Integrated Control Center Pforzheim-Enzkreis will control the activation of the sirens during the drill.

While details specific to the Pforzheim drill are not yet available, it can be inferred that its purpose aligns with the typical objectives of civil defense drills — strengthening the city's and region's preparedness against emergencies through practical exercises conducted nationwide on the same date.

The federal government is supporting this measure with around 130,000 euros. In addition to the siren test, the National Warning Center will send warning information via the NINA warning app and cell broadcasting during the drill. However, no all-clear message will be sent via cell broadcasting during the test.

The all-clear message from the National Warning Center will be sent to smartphones at 11:45 a.m., signifying that there is no longer an immediate danger. Despite new communication technology, practical alternatives for quickly and comprehensively warning the population are not yet available.

For more precise details such as scenario specifics, participating agencies, or feedback from the 2023 drill, it would be necessary to consult official German civil protection websites like the Bundesamt für Bevölkerungsschutz und Katastrophenhilfe, local government communications from Pforzheim, or news reports from that period.
