Peter Pan Stakes 2025 Contenders, Predictions, and Betting Lines
Peter Pan Stakes 2025
It's all about the young guns in the horse racing world at this time, and the Peter Pan Stakes is no exception. This Grade 3 stakes race is a local prep event for the Belmont Stakes, typically run at Belmont Park. However, plans for 2025 have it happening at Aqueduct instead, as Belmont Park won't reopen until the following year.
The Peter Pan Stakes kicks off Race 11 on Saturday, May 10, with a post time of 6:46 p.m. ET. With a purse of $200,000, the race is run over 1 1⁄8 miles, making it a bit shorter than the Belmont, which is 1 1⁄2 miles. A total of ten horses are lined up for this showdown, and we'll see if any of them decide to tack on the last leg of the Triple Crown on June 7.
Entries and Odds for the Peter Pan Stakes 2025:
Based on the odds, there are several horses with a decent shot at hitting the board. However, a few horses, like Captain Cook and Hill Road, stand out as frontrunners, with lesser experience horses like Vassimo and Happily Delusional having more work to do.
The Lowdown on All 10 Peter Pan Stakes Horses:
- Vassimo (5-1; I. Ortiz Jr/Pletcher): Pletcher's entry for the race is the son of Nyquist and Bsharpsonata. His Kentucky Derby prep races at Fair Grounds didn't go so well (fourth in the Risen Star and sixth in the Louisiana Derby). But with Pletcher seeking his sixth Peter Pan win, and Irad Ortiz Jr. in the saddle, they might just pull off a trick or two.
- Happily Delusional (20-1; Lopez/Linder): Happily Delusional has run eight races, but his speed figures don't exactly impress. This Flatter and Tattersail colt might do better in the Long Branch at Monmouth Park.
- Surfside Moon (8-1; Alvarado/Lawrence): Unpredictable as the weather, Surfside Moon may just rise to the occasion. After a spectacular debut win on the turf at Delaware Park, he's shown a blend of brilliance and inconsistency. With Junior Alvarado and James Lawrence, there is definitely some potential here, but who knows if it'll show up.
- Hill Road (5/2; Prat/Brown): Chad Brown and Flavien Prat have always been a winning team. This quality road and Exotic Notion colt has the perfect setup for this race, as the field lacks top-end speed. He came off a winter hiatus to finish third in the Tampa Bay Derby, and if the pace is not too intense, he could storm ahead to victory.
- McAfee (8-1; Velazquez/Dutrow): Rick Dutrow Jr.'s wild card entrant, McAfee sports blinkers for this race. With the blinkers and a string of experience, he could be a dark horse contender. But will it be here, or should we keep an eye out for him throughout the summer?
- Uncaged (6-1; Carmouche/Pletcher): Pletcher believes he's found a rocket with Uncaged. After a one-mile win on a muddy track at Aqueduct in his last race, he may just prove him right. With Carmouche on board for the second straight time, expect them to make a strong push.
- First Pitch (50-1; Lezcano/Jimenez): With a win earlier this year, First Pitch could be due for another triumph. However, this field is leaps and bounds above his previous competition, so it's questionable if he can match up.
- Captain Cook (2-1; Franco/Dutrow): Captain Cook put up a good effort in the Withers Stakes and is the morning line favorite. However, his performance in the Wood Memorial leaves some doubts about his stamina at the longer distances. Will he rise to the challenge?
- Brereton's Baytown (30-1; Mendez/McEntee): With 11 races under his belt, Brereton's Baytown brings plenty of experience. However, his finishes have been underwhelming, and despite a claim win at Laurel Park, it's hard to see him contending for the top spot.
- Lordship (12-1; Davis/Brown): The other entry for Chad Brown, Lordship is an exciting prospect with a gunrunner sire and a maternal grandfather who was champion on turf in Giant's Causeway. With Brown crossing him over to this race, it's almost a given that he's ready to show his stuff. Keep an eye on this one!
Peter Pan Stakes 2025 Picks:
It's anybody's game with ten horses vying for the top spot. While seven of them look like they could win, there are a few that stand out:
- Uncaged: Pletcher seems to have a winner on his hand with Uncaged, and with Carmouche on board for the second straight race, they could pull ahead of the pack.
- Hill Road: With Chad Brown and Flavien Prat at the helm, Hill Road could snag the win if the pace unfolds in his favor. His closing style combined with the lack of top-end speed in the field makes him a strong contender.
- Lordship: Brown's other entrant, Lordship, is a wild card with a single data point and a remarkable pedigree. The price for this brown beauty could offer a decent payout, so it's worth placing a small wager.
