The New York Mets have a new home run king. On Tuesday, Pete Alonso hit his 253rd home run, breaking the franchise record previously held by Darryl Strawberry.

Alonso's record-setting home run was a two-run shot that also drove in Brandon Nimmo. The home run was hit in the third inning against Braves ace Spencer Strider. Manager Carlos Mendoza stated that the achievement was "pretty surreal, unbelievable, special."

Pete Alonso, who made his MLB debut in 2019, slugged a rookie-record 53 home runs that season. Since then, he has continued to be one of the most prolific sluggers in Mets history. As of August 2025, Alonso has 254 home runs in his Mets career, making him the new all-time home run leader for the team.

Darryl Strawberry, who previously held the franchise home run record, was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1980 draft. He was a force for the Mets in the 1980s, winning NL Rookie of the Year in 1983, going to seven straight All-Star Games from 1984-90, and averaging 36 homers per year from 1987-90. He was a centerpiece player for New York's 1986 World Series championship team.

Strawberry held the record for 37 years before Alonso tied and then broke it. Alonso achieved this milestone in fewer games (963 games versus Strawberry's 1,109) and has been one of the most prolific sluggers in Mets history since his debut.

The team with the second-lowest total from their all-time home run king is the Arizona Diamondbacks with Luis Gonzalez (224). The team with the third-lowest total is the Mets themselves with Alonso (254 and counting). The team with the fifth-lowest total is the Miami Marlins with Giancarlo Stanton (267).

Pete Alonso became a free agent this past offseason and eventually returned to New York on a two-year, $54 million contract with an opt out. He is expected to opt out and give free agency another go this winter.

The Mets, who joined the league as an expansion team in 1962 and went 40-120 in their inaugural season, have come a long way since then. They won their first World Series title in 1969. The team with the highest total from their all-time home run king is the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves with Hank Aaron's 733 home runs. The New York Yankees (Babe Ruth with 659) and New York/San Francisco Giants (Willie Mays with 646) also have players who hit over 600 home runs in their uniform.

In a video message to Mets fans, Alonso said that the achievement was "a wild dream" and "really special." He also emphasised that he is "all about winning."
