Train passenger takes a selfie, resulting in fatal electrocution - Person meets tragic end by attempting to capture a selfie atop an electrified train

In an unfortunate incident that occurred on Sunday afternoon, a 25-year-old man's bid for a spectacular selfie at Cologne Central Station resulted in a series of unfortunate events. The Federal Police reported that the man's actions caused an electrical arc, leading to a disruption in train traffic and, ultimately, a tragic outcome.

The incident took place on a stationary train at the bustling transport hub. The man, in his pursuit of the perfect selfie, approached a live power line too closely, causing an electrical arc with a current approximately 65 times stronger than that from a standard power socket. As a result, the man received an electric shock, even without direct contact with the power line, and was hospitalized with severe burns.

Sadly, the man passed away due to his injuries, and the Federal Police are now seeking witnesses to the incident to gather more information. The tragic event caused significant disruptions in train traffic, affecting 24 trains, with three completely or partially cancelled, and three rerouted.

This incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers associated with taking selfies near power lines or dangerous spots at stations. Common consequences include electrocution or electric shock, physical injuries from falls, traffic accidents or crowd disruptions, and interference with safety operations.

To prevent similar incidents, various measures can be taken. These include public education and clear signage, physical barriers and secure fencing, surveillance and enforcement, awareness campaigns targeting social media trends, promoting alternative safe photo spots, and designating and advertising safe selfie zones away from hazards.

While no direct safety statistics or warnings about selfies at Cologne Central Station were found in the search results, general safety advice for busy German train stations emphasizes remaining alert to avoid distractions and risks. Extrapolating from this, locations near power lines demand even higher caution.

These measures align with general urban safety recommendations that stress awareness, avoiding distractions like smartphone use in hazardous areas, and following local safety rules near transport and electrical infrastructure. It is crucial for everyone to prioritize safety over the pursuit of a perfect selfie.
