Person Detained for Deadly BMW Collision
In a tragic turn of events, a fatal accident occurred near the Delhi Cantonment Metro station around 1.30 pm on Sunday. The accident claimed the life of a senior finance ministry official, Navjot Singh.
Eyewitnesses, including laborers working near the site, reported hearing a loud crash and seeing a BMW overturned on the central verge after skidding nearly 50 meters. The BMW, which had five occupants at the time of the crash, was one of the vehicles involved in the accident. The other was a motorcycle. Both vehicles have been seized for further investigation.
As the chaos unfolded, many people at the scene were instead recording videos of the accident, leaving the injured in dire need of immediate help. It was then that Van driver Mohammad Gulfam stepped in, transporting all four injured persons, including Navjot Singh's wife, Sandeep Kaur, and another worker named Sandeep Kaur. An 18-year-old worker, Ankit, also lent a hand, helping to take out a girl who was bleeding from the nose and pulling out a boy and another woman from the BMW.
Sandeep Kaur, despite her injuries, managed to give Gulfam her home address. Navjot Singh was declared dead after approximately 20 to 25 minutes at the hospital in Azadpur. His wife, Sandeep Kaur, is currently under treatment.
The sections invoked in the case include 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 125B (acts endangering life or personal safety of others), 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), and 238 (causing disappearance of evidence or giving false information to screen an offender).
A 38-year-old woman named Gaganpreet Kaur was arrested in New Delhi for allegedly driving the BMW that caused the accident. Gaganpreet's father served as a director at a hospital in GTB Nagar, which police suspect could be the reason why the injured victims were taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Azadpur, despite its distance from the accident site.
During further interrogation, Gaganpreet claimed she was in a state of panic after the crash and could not recall how it happened. However, police suspect tampering with the medical reports of the accused woman, and the matter is under investigation. A case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been registered against Gaganpreet Kaur under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Gaganpreet requested a van driver, Mohammad Gulfam, to take the victims to the hospital in Azadpur. It was later discovered that Gaganpreet only knew of the hospital in Azadpur because her children had been treated there during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The investigation into this tragic accident continues, with the hope that justice will be served for the victims and their families.
