Persisting Wildfire Threatens Gohrishheide Localities
A significant forest fire, estimated to affect around 1,300 hectares, is currently causing concern in the regions of Heidehäuser and Gohrischheide in Saxony. The fire has been challenging to contain due to the risk of remaining munitions detonating from the area's history as a former training ground for the Soviet Army.
In an effort to combat the blaze, a firefighting robot has been deployed in Heidehäuser to create firebreaks, while four firefighting helicopters and two water cannons are also in operation. To protect an explosives depot in Jacobsthal Bahnhof, bulldozers have created protective strips.
The smoke plumes from the fire have reached as far as Berlin, and the Nina warning app alerted residents in several Brandenburg districts to increased smoke and odor pollution on Saturday morning. The fire in Heidehäuser is currently threatening to cross a main road.
Satellite images are being analysed to determine the extent of the fire, and the forest fire danger in the northern parts of Saxony, including the Gohrischheide, has reached the highest warning level 5.

The fire, which initially covered approximately 2,400 square meters, has now been brought under control and is no longer spreading. Around 110 emergency personnel were involved, and smoke plumes were visible above the city.
However, the cause of the Dresden Heath fire remains unknown, and there are no reports of a fire in the Gohrisch heath as of July 6, 2025. Firefighters continue to monitor the situation to prevent renewed outbreaks.
In the ongoing Heidehäuser fire, evacuations are ongoing in Jacobsthal Bahnhof and Heidehäuser, as reported by the Meißen district administration. There is currently no immediate threat to the residential areas and power supply facilities in Neudorf and Lichtensee, which were temporarily evacuated a few days ago.
Precipitation is forecast for Monday and Tuesday, which could help contain the forest fire. Specialists from Saxony-Anhalt for combating vegetation fires are expected to arrive on Sunday to assist in the efforts.
