"Persisting in the Pursuit of Liberation" - The 25-year-old Memorial at Point Alpha Stands Tall

Remembering the Past: The Memorial Stone at Point Alpha Commemorates a Era of Division and Unity

Nestled in the heart of Germany, the Point Alpha Foundation serves as a poignant reminder of a time when the country was divided, and the world was on the brink of war. The memorial stone, unveiled and inaugurated in 1995, stands as a testament to the historic significance of Point Alpha as a Cold War observation post on the inner German border between East and West Germany.

The memorial stone, about four meters high, is a sandstone boulder that symbolizes the strength and endurance of the era. Its design, created by students of the wood sculpture craft of the state vocational training center Bad Salzungen, beautifully represents the contrast between separation and unity. Two of the steles are separated by a gap with identical cut surfaces, symbolizing German division, while the stele in the background shows these parts combined, symbolizing reunification, with a still visible and painful scar.

The unveiling of the memorial stone was a significant ceremonial event, attended by several hundred spectators. The event, which took place on August 13, 2000, was addressed by the then Thuringian Minister-President Dr. Bernhard Vogel. The inscription on the plaque attached to the memorial stone reads: "To the US Armored Cavalry Regiments 11 and 14 in gratitude for their service for peace and freedom." On the back of the monument, there is the slogan "We are one people" and the quote of the former Chancellor Willy Brandt: "Now grows together what belongs together."

The monument, which is part of the memorial and meeting place between Rasdorf and Geisa, has not lost any of its significance. Today, 35 years after reunification, many people only know the border from their parents' and grandparents' stories. However, the monument stands as a reminder of the division between East and West Germany and the role of Point Alpha as a frontline observation post during that era. It honors the soldiers who protected freedom and monitored the GDR border, and it represents hope for peace, freedom, and unity in Germany and beyond.

Parts of the former border fence, original symbols of the DDR regime, and some symbolic documents have been sealed in a capsule in the base of the monument. This serves as a powerful reminder of the past, while also symbolizing the hope for a better future.
