"Persisting in our efforts is crucial to preserving our musical niche. Death metal band Overthrust from Botswana represents African metal genre on the global stage"

In the heart of Botswana, a 4-piece old school death metal band named Overthrust is making waves in the metal scene, not just in their home country, but across the globe. Formed in Ghanzi, Overthrust has been a prominent part of Botswana's metal scene since their inception.

Overthrust's music and visual aesthetic are deeply rooted in their identity. Their latest album, "Infected By Myth," released in 2024, follows their 2015 debut and showcases their unique sound. The album has received recognition from both Russia and the USA, with Indian River Music Company offering to help distribute their record.

The band's current UK tour, their first, has been met with great success. They played a sold-out show in Brixton's Club Cheek, following a successful night in Brighton. Vocalist Vulture Thrust admitted that it's a bit warm for their winter-like attire, but the audience's enthusiasm more than made up for it.

Lead guitarist Spencer Thrust is often seen sporting a tricorn hat, adding a distinctive touch to the band's image. The band members, dressed in leather jackets, denim jeans, boots, and Stetsons, present a formidable sight on stage.

Overthrust's journey has not been without its challenges. Tragedy halted their momentum in 2018 when drummer Suicide Torment was killed by a drunk driver. In tribute to him, the band released an EP named after him in 2019.

Despite the setbacks, Overthrust continues to push forward. They have been hosting their own Winter Metal Mania Festival since 2010, raising money for disadvantaged children in Botswana. They also continue to work with Wacken as judges for Sub-Saharan Africa, helping usher in the next generation of metal talent.

Former Sepultura drummer Iggor Cavalera is supporting Overthrust on their UK tour, adding another layer of excitement to their performances. Botswana's metal scene went viral due to Frank Marshall's photography series, Edward Banchs' book "Heavy Metal Africa," and the documentary "Freedom In The Dark."

Overthrust's Kickstarter campaign raised £1,220 towards costs for their 2025 European and UK tour. They reached out to their fans to help fund their tour, with the National Arts Council Of Botswana helping secure visas for them.

Overthrust is not the first death metal band from Botswana, with Nosey Road being an earlier band in the scene. However, they are certainly making a name for themselves, one show at a time. If you haven't had the chance to see them live, "Infected By Myth" is out now via Indian River Music Company. Don't miss out on the opportunity to experience the raw power of this Botswanan death metal sensation.
