Persisting Conflicts Across the World

In a significant development, the United States conducted Operation Midnight Hammer on June 21-22, 2025, targeting three main Iranian nuclear facilities with bunker-buster bombs. The operation, led by a team of experienced pilots from the Whiteman Air Force Base, was aimed at setting a new course in the long-standing Iran nuclear standoff.

Commander Josh Vitale, who personally confirmed the pilots' selection and preparation process, oversaw the direct execution of the operation. B-2 Spirit stealth bombers, equipped with the powerful GBU-57 bunker-busting bomb, were employed in the mission. This bomb, capable of penetrating approximately 80 meters of stone, is designed to neutralise deeply buried targets.

Iran's pursuit of nuclear capabilities has been a contentious issue for several years. The country, often accused of sponsoring terrorism, civil war, and unrest in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen, has been striving to become a nuclear power. Iran's aggressive actions, such as attacking Israel via terrorist proxies like Hamas and Hezbollah, have further escalated tensions in the region.

The world has been experiencing an enduring conflict, often with shifting coalitions, that cannot be categorised as a traditional world war. This conflict has seen the emergence of non-classical forms of warfare, such as propaganda, economic warfare, cyberattacks, and terrorism.

The domestic opposition in Iran is growing, especially in response to the American ultimatum. The ultimatum was issued by President Trump after Israel's failed attempt to neutralise Iran's nuclear facilities. Iran, however, has rejected all proposals made by the foreign ministers of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

The so-called "rules-based world order" was, in fact, a pax Americana enforced by the U.S., and it was not always rules-based. The West, along with authoritarians, represents a global minority with a declining demography. The assumption that the majority would align with the West for values-based reasons is a fallacy.

The world has been commonly classified into "the West," "the authoritarians," and the "Global South." Iran, in this context, belongs to the "authoritarians" camp. Space and the Arctic are emerging as potential new battlefields in this global power struggle.

As the dust settles from Operation Midnight Hammer, the impact on Iran's nuclear program remains to be seen. However, the operation undeniably marks a significant shift in the ongoing conflict, signalling a potential turning point in the Iran nuclear crisis.
