Persisting Blaze in Vila Real Maintains Fiery Edge of Concern for 10 Days Straight
The Vila Real fire in the Serra do Alvão region of Portugal has been a significant challenge for firefighters since it broke out on the night of July 31/August 1, 2025. The blaze, which has been burning for ten days, has threatened several localities, including Outeiro and Testeira.
Initially starting in the Sirarelhos area, the fire quickly spread to nearby localities such as Gontães, São Miguel da Pena, and Vila Cova. Despite intense efforts by firefighting teams, the fire reignited near a house late Sunday afternoon, and it continues to pose a threat despite being controlled to 80%.
Hundreds of firefighters and numerous vehicles have been deployed to combat the blaze, with aerial firefighting resources also being mobilized to reinforce ground efforts starting from 8:30 AM daily. However, sporadic new outbreaks have kept the fire risk elevated in Serra do Alvão, and firefighting remains a high priority in the region.
The easing of the wind has potentially aided in the extinguishing of the fire, but no new reignitions have been reported since. If there are no new reignitions, the fire in Vila Real could be extinguished.
The ongoing fire activity in Serra do Alvão has even impacted public events such as the Volta a Portugal cycling race, causing route deviations and neutralization of parts of the race for safety due to active fires in the area.
Despite the challenges, firefighters continue to work tirelessly to protect the small villages in the Serra do Alvão region. The fight against the Vila Real fire continues, with hopes that it will soon be brought under control.
