Persistence in Sturgeon Is Unyielding
Victorious Kiel Keeps Fighting in Bundesliga 2
Time's ticking for Holstein Kiel in Bundesliga 2, as they aim to avoid the drop. With FC Heidenheim's last-minute win over Stuttgart, the pressure is on. They recently faced Borussia Mönchengladbach, still chasing Europe, in a nail-biting match. Shuto Machino (15') and Alexander Bernhardsson (23') put KSV ahead 2:0 at halftime. Gladbach responded with two equalizing goals, but KSV fought back with a second-half goal by Armin Gigovic (76'). Despite a late equalizer from a substitute, KSV emerged victorious thanks to Machino's (91') heroic winner.
While Thomas Dähne starred in goal for Kiel, the team transfered the "red lantern" to VfL after Bochum drew with Union Berlin. But there was joy in the Landesliga, where Preetz TSV secured a crucial, high-scoring 4:0 win over direct competitor TuS Hartenholm in the relegation battle. Moritz Danberg scored twice, Jendrik Müller and Johannes Schütt also got on the scoresheet.
In the Verbandsliga Ost, SG Probstei claimed a 4:1 victory over SVE Comet, with Alban Jasari making history as the match winner. The basement duel in Schönkirchen went to TSG with a 5:2 victory over MED Kiel, but this win may have come too late. Heikendorf lost despite leading 3:2 against SG Eckernförde/Fleckeby, but they remain safely mid-table.
Next weekend, Holstein Kiel travels to Augsburg in the Bundesliga. They aim to repeat their first-leg victory and turn the game around after going behind. In Landesliga, Preetz TSV must travel to SC Rapid in Lübeck. A win could be another important step towards survival for PTSV. Meanwhile, the Verbandsliga Ost will see SG Eckernförde/Fleckeby face Plön on May 3rd. The remaining fixtures for the weekend include Comet Kiel vs. Barkelsbyer SV, Suchsdorfer SV vs. Eckernförde U23, MTV Dänischenhagen hosting TSV Flintbek, and many more.
Before the Bundesliga 2 season starts in early August 2025, Kiel is on a 10-day training camp and US tour in Minnesota. They'll play a friendly match against MLS team Minnesota United on 7 July and also have an exhibition against their own reserve team.
